A serious crash in Whitby on Saturday night left a 39-year-old man with life-threatening injuries and sent five others to hospital, according to Durham police. The incident occurred just after 11 p.m. at the intersection of Taunton Road West and Cochrane Street, where a white Jeep Wrangler traveling eastbound collided with a black Honda SUV turning south.

The critically injured man was a passenger in the Jeep and was transported to a trauma centre in the Toronto area. Four other occupants of the Jeep, along with the Honda driver, were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Police suspect alcohol may have played a role in the crash. The roadway was closed for several hours during the investigation but has since reopened. The cause remains under investigation.
