A 28-year-old skateboarder was seriously injured in a collision with an SUV on Wednesday morning in Kitchener. The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. near the intersection of Bridge Street West and Woolwich Street.

The man was taken to a hospital outside the region due to the severity of his injuries. Police later closed off the area for investigation, with visible evidence at the scene including a damaged windshield, a skateboard, and clothing on the ground.

Nearby resident Grant Millard described seeing officers recreating the possible impact, suggesting the skateboarder may have struck the vehicle’s hood and windshield. He also noted that while this is the first serious pedestrian incident he’s aware of, the corner is known for frequent accidents involving bicycles and scooters losing control on the curve—estimating 30 to 40 such cases in recent years.

The crash occurred near a crosswalk marked with a sign stating “Pedestrians yield to traffic.” However, legal experts emphasize that while pedestrians should follow the rules, drivers bear greater responsibility for ensuring safety.

Police are asking witnesses or anyone with video footage of the incident to contact the Traffic Services Unit.
