Ontario Provincial Police reported more than 200 crashes across the Greater Toronto Area in the past 24 hours as icy conditions created dangerous driving situations.
According to OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt, roughly 220 collisions occurred between Sunday and the early hours of Monday. He said significant snowfall and rapidly dropping temperatures turned slush and wet roads into hard-packed snow and ice, catching many drivers off guard.
Environment Canada recorded about 10 centimetres of snow at Toronto Pearson International Airport and 17 centimetres in Hamilton. Schmidt noted that the number of crashes was well above average for a typical Sunday and did not include the Monday morning rush hour.
