A fire at a woodworking facility in Woolwich sent a teenager to hospital and caused significant damage, with investigators examining whether a dust explosion was involved.

Emergency crews responded around 9 a.m. Wednesday to an industrial business on Arthur Street North near Sandy Hills Drive after employees reported a loud bang coming from machinery inside the building.

Fire officials believe the incident may have started as a dust explosion within the facility, though that has not yet been confirmed and remains under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.

A 16-year-old worker was taken to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released.

The damage is estimated at about $300,000. Both the Ministry of Labour and police attended the scene as part of the ongoing investigation into what caused the fire.
