A man has died after a tent fire in a wooded area of St. Catharines early Tuesday morning.

Niagara Regional Police said officers on patrol around 3:15 a.m. discovered a large, active blaze involving a tent at Mountain Locks Park along the Merritt Trail.

Firefighters arrived and put out the flames, but the structure had already been destroyed, according to St. Catharines Deputy Fire Chief Trevor Parker.

The death is now under investigation by the Niagara police criminal investigations branch in coordination with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office.

Update – The victim is identified to be 53-year-old Kenneth Dombroskie and his death is determined to be a homicide.
