Over the weekend, Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services responded to three separate residential fires within a 24-hour period, one of which was deemed suspicious, and another sent a resident to the hospital.
The first fire occurred just before 3 a.m. on Saturday in the 300 block of Wellington Street East. Upon arrival, firefighters observed significant smoke coming from an unoccupied residential dwelling. Crews quickly contained the flames, and PUC Services and Enbridge Gas were called to the scene. After an investigation, the fire was determined to be suspicious, and the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service took over the scene. While the dwelling sustained extensive fire and smoke damage, no injuries were reported.
The second fire occurred at approximately 8 a.m. on the 100 block of Sutton Place. Smoke and flames were visible from the second story of a semi-detached residential building. Fire crews managed to extinguish the fire, but its cause remains undetermined. The second-storey area suffered significant damage, and one resident was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The final fire took place early Sunday morning, around 2 a.m., in the 700 block of Wellington Street East. This was also a vacant residential building. Upon arrival, firefighters found visible fire and heavy smoke. Crews extinguished the blaze, though the cause is still under investigation. The dwelling sustained significant damage, but there were no reported injuries.
Authorities have not provided damage estimates for any of the properties involved in the fires.
