An Ottawa mother is raising concerns after discovering a sharp piece of metal inside a bag of dried fruit intended for her young child.

Amy Mastromattei said she bought an organic dried fruit blend from a Metro Inc. store near Merivale Road and Viewmount Drive on April 10. While her two-year-old daughter was eating the snack, she noticed what she described as a jagged metal blade, roughly four inches long, inside the package. She believes the object came from the manufacturing process, noting it had fruit residue on it.

No one was injured, but Mastromattei said the situation could have been far more serious, especially with a nine-month-old also in the home. She expressed frustration with the store’s initial response, saying the only compensation offered was a $25 gift card in exchange for returning the product.

The company said it believed the item would be returned for further inspection and described the situation as an isolated case. It has since contacted the manufacturer and is reviewing what happened.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed it is aware of the complaint and has launched a food safety investigation. That process may involve tracking the product’s distribution, inspecting facilities, and assessing any potential health risks. A recall could be issued if necessary.

Mastromattei said she is considering next steps, including possible legal action, and is urging stricter quality control measures. She also advised other parents to closely check their children’s food, emphasizing that unexpected hazards can occur.
