A 22-year-old Toronto man is facing a long list of charges after allegedly stealing the very vehicle he crashed into during an early-morning collision near Toronto Pearson Airport.
According to Ontario Provincial Police, the incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. Sunday on the southbound lanes of Highway 427 near the Highway 409/401 split. A black Mazda struck a brown Hyundai Santa Fe, then veered out of control and hit a wall.
Police say the Mazda’s driver then forcibly took the Santa Fe — which was carrying a family of four — and fled the scene.
Toronto OPP officers later located and arrested the suspect. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing and is charged with armed robbery, uttering threats, obstructing police, taking a vehicle without consent, possession of stolen property, theft over $5,000, driving while suspended, careless driving, and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.
Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash-cam footage to call the OPP at 416-235-4981.
