A tow truck operator has died after being struck by a vehicle while working along a roadway in Wellington County.

Ontario Provincial Police say the incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Dec. 27 on Wellington Road 26, between Sideroad 27 and Sideroad 30. The operator was assisting another motorist when they were hit by a passing vehicle. The victim, a 39-year-old from Richmond Hill, was rushed to hospital with critical injuries and later died two days after the collision.

The driver involved was also taken to hospital but suffered only minor injuries. Police have not confirmed whether charges have been laid and continue to investigate, asking anyone with information to come forward.

Under Ontario law, drivers are required to slow down and move over when passing tow trucks displaying flashing amber lights, when it is safe to do so.
