A heavy tow truck will be needed to recover a transport truck that slid off Highway 401 in London early Thursday.

Emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes near Pond Mills Road around 4 a.m. London fire officials say the truck ended up at the bottom of a steep, roughly 30-metre ditch amid heavy snow.

Firefighters used a rope system to reach the driver, who was unable to climb out on their own due to the conditions. Paramedics assessed the driver at the scene.

The truck will remain in place until weather conditions improve enough for it to be safely removed.
