Two separate crashes involving transport trucks led to overnight closures on major northern Ontario highways Saturday, with both routes reopening several hours later.
The first collision occurred on Highway 11 near Lambert Road in Opasatika, west of Kapuskasing. Ontario Provincial Police reported shortly before 7 p.m. that two transport trucks were involved, noting at the time that injuries were still being assessed. The closure was later extended to include the entire stretch of Highway 11 between Kapuskasing and Hearst. The highway remained shut for roughly nine hours before reopening just before 4 a.m. Sunday, as police completed their investigation and cleanup.
Later that evening, a separate and unrelated crash involving two transport trucks was reported on Highway 17 in Upsala, approximately 200 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay. OPP announced the incident at 8:19 p.m., closing the highway in both directions while injuries were evaluated. That closure was brief, with traffic resuming by 9:16 p.m.
Police have not released further details on the causes of either crash or the extent of any injuries.
