Sukhwinder Sidhu has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm in a devastating 2023 collision that killed Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul and injured four others, including her infant son.

The crash occurred on August 22, 2023 in Melancthon Township on County Road 124, where court evidence showed Sidhu had been working for about 26 hours and driving for nearly 16 hours straight before entering a construction zone at speeds close to 108 km/h in an area with a 60 km/h limit. His transport truck struck multiple vehicles in a chain-reaction collision that ultimately led to Paul’s death.

Paul’s husband, Mitch Islam, delivered emotional victim impact remarks describing the profound loss of his wife and the future they had planned together, including raising their young son. The child, who was rescued from the wreckage, suffered a broken leg and was taken to SickKids Hospital.

Other family members and victims described lasting physical and emotional harm, with Paul’s parents remembering her as a talented, compassionate athlete and lawyer with a promising future that was cut short.

Sidhu apologized in court, expressing remorse and acknowledging the lifelong impact of the crash, including the loss experienced by Paul’s family. His defence had sought a conditional sentence, arguing he was remorseful and did not intend harm.

However, Justice Clayton Conlan rejected that request, describing the incident as catastrophic and emphasizing that Sidhu’s conduct as a professional driver led to severe and irreversible consequences. The judge imposed a prison term and a seven-year driving ban following his release.
