A truck driver was seriously injured after a freight train collided with a tri-axle tanker truck at a railway crossing in Dorchester on Monday morning.

The crash occurred shortly after 9 a.m. at the CN Rail crossing on Sheils Lane, a location that does not have warning gates or signal lights. The truck driver was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The train conductor was not injured.

Authorities said the truck was carrying approximately 400 litres of herbicide, which spilled following the collision. Environmental officials attended the scene and confirmed the spill was contained within the railway right-of-way. Efforts are underway to address any environmental impacts.

The incident also caused temporary delays for VIA Rail services operating through the area, though rail traffic has since resumed and no further service disruptions are expected.

The circumstances surrounding the collision remains under investigation.
