Ottawa firefighters responded to a two-alarm fire at a restaurant in a Kanata strip mall on Monday afternoon. The fire broke out inside the restaurant on Eagleson Road around 2:09 p.m. after a 911 caller reported smoke coming from the washroom.
A second alarm was triggered about 20 minutes later as flames spread to the roof and began affecting nearby businesses. Firefighters quickly launched a “fast attack” and advanced a hose line into the building, despite the challenging hot and humid conditions, with temperatures reaching 32°C and a humidex of 38°C.
To help combat the heat, an OC Transpo bus was brought in to provide a cooling refuge for the crews. The fire was declared under control at 3:13 p.m., just over an hour after it started. High-pressured fans were used to clear residual smoke from the building.
No injuries were reported, and an Ottawa Fire Services investigator is working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
