Two boaters were rescued and taken to hospital after their vessel collided with a barge on Lake Joseph on Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m., leaving one person in the water and another trapped inside the submerged pilot house.

Workers aboard the barge pulled one boater to safety and secured the damaged vessel to prevent it from sinking further while rescue crews were called in.

The Muskoka Lakes Fire Department arrived shortly afterward, deploying a fireboat and two rescue craft. A rescue swimmer spent about 50 minutes in the cold water clearing debris before the second boater could be freed.

Paramedics transported both individuals to hospital. Their conditions have not been disclosed.
