Two people were killed and three others were injured after a rear-end collision on Highway 401 in Mississauga on Wednesday morning.

Police said the crash occurred just before 9 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes near Dixie Road as traffic was slowing. An 80-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman, both from Cambridge and passengers in the vehicle that was struck, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three additional occupants were taken to hospital with injuries, including one person who was airlifted to a trauma centre in critical condition.

The collision prompted the closure of the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401 and connecting eastbound Highway 403 lanes for several hours while investigators examined the scene. All affected lanes reopened later in the afternoon.
