A fire in Kitchener early Tuesday morning caused extensive damage to two properties, prompting evacuations and a major emergency response. Crews were called shortly after midnight to a blaze that began in a three-car garage and attached shed behind a Water Street home. The fire spread along the fence and nearby trees, reaching a neighbouring property on College Street.
Residents in the area, including those living above a nearby convenience store, were temporarily evacuated for safety. Neighbours described waking up to flames and waiting outside for over an hour as emergency crews worked to bring the situation under control.
Despite the intensity of the fire and current fire ban conditions due to dry weather, firefighters were able to contain the blaze and prevent further spread. No injuries were reported, and those inside the affected home escaped safely. Damage is estimated at around $600,000.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities are reminding the public to be extra cautious during the ongoing fire ban.
