A suspected street race may have preceded a deadly early-morning crash in North York that claimed the lives of two men, according to Toronto police.
The collision happened shortly after 4:30 a.m. Saturday near Finch Avenue West and Romfield Lane, west of Keele Street. Police said a black Audi SUV was heading east on Finch at a high speed when its driver lost control and crashed into a concrete traffic light pole.
The driver, 39, and his 42-year-old passenger were both killed in the impact. Emergency crews pronounced the two men dead at the scene.
Investigators initially focused on speed as a possible factor. A subsequent review of evidence led police to believe the Audi had been racing another black SUV immediately before the crash.
Police said the second SUV may have been hit by debris from the collision. Investigators are looking for a vehicle that could have damage to either its front or rear passenger-side panels.
Authorities have not identified the driver of the second SUV and are continuing efforts to locate them. Anyone who witnessed the vehicles in the area before the crash or has information that could help identify the second driver is being asked to contact police.
The circumstances surrounding the suspected race and the fatal collision remain under investigation.
