Two people are facing a combined total of more than two dozen charges after an alleged attempt to evade police in Vaughan that included ramming a cruiser.

York Regional Police say officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle near Highway 7 and Jane Street around 10:40 p.m. Sunday. The vehicle allegedly forced its way through a security gate and entered an industrial property, where officers later located it and determined it was a stolen Toyota SUV.

Police allege the driver deliberately struck a cruiser in an effort to escape. Additional officers responded and managed to surround the SUV. Both occupants reportedly tried to flee again but were arrested a short time later.

Investigators say the driver became aggressive during the arrest, gave false identification, and was later found to be impaired. A search of the vehicle allegedly turned up break-and-enter tools and a quantity of a controlled substance.

The suspects were identified as 42-year-old Daryl Horne, who has no fixed address, and 34-year-old Laura Irvine of London, Ontario. Horne is facing 13 charges, including vehicle theft, impaired driving, resisting arrest, assault to resist arrest, possession of stolen property over $5,000, impersonation, and multiple probation violations. Police noted he was already on probation at the time.

Irvine is charged with possessing break-in tools, possessing stolen property over $5,000, and possession of a controlled substance.
