Two people have been taken to hospital following a rear-end crash involving a car and a disabled tractor-trailer on Highway 401 in Oshawa Thursday afternoon.
The collision happened shortly before 4 p.m. in the westbound lanes. Ontario Provincial Police said the tractor-trailer had broken down and was partially blocking an active lane when it was struck from behind.
The car driver suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken to a trauma centre. The passenger was transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
The westbound 401 remains closed through the affected stretch, with police expecting the highway to reopen at around 11 p.m.
