A multi-vehicle collision caused major disruptions on Highway 401 in Cambridge Wednesday afternoon.

Ontario Provincial Police and emergency crews were called to the eastbound lanes near Highway 8 around 2:30 p.m. The crash involved at least six vehicles, including a dump truck that spilled sand and gravel across the highway.

Two people were taken to hospital following the crash, with one suffering minor injuries and another in serious but stable condition. After examining evidence at the scene, police identified the driver of a sedan as a focus of the investigation and said charges are pending.

The collision forced the closure of the eastbound 401 and created significant traffic backups, including delays on both flyover ramps exiting Highway 8. Crews faced an extensive cleanup operation at the scene.

The eastbound lanes remained closed for several hours before police confirmed they had reopened at about 7:25 p.m.
