A fire at a North York apartment building late Monday night has displaced nearly 30 residents and resulted in the deaths of two pets, according to Toronto Fire officials.
The blaze broke out around 11:45 p.m. in a fourth-floor unit near Downsview Park Boulevard and Keele Street. Fire crews quickly contained and extinguished the fire within the unit, but smoke and water damage spread to other parts of the building, particularly affecting the top three floors.
Five individuals, including three minors, one adult, and a firefighter, were transported to hospital. The residents were treated for smoke inhalation, and the firefighter for heat exhaustion. All have since been released.
A total of 29 residents have been displaced, and many from the heavily damaged fourth floor may not be able to return for at least a week while restoration and insurance efforts continue. The Canadian Red Cross is currently providing accommodations.
Sadly, a dog and a cat were found dead in the unit where the fire started. Toronto Fire confirmed the animals died from smoke exposure, and their remains have been handled by the Humane Society.
Fire crews will remain on site for 24 hours to remove damaged materials and monitor for any flare-ups. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
