Two riders were rescued after a snowmobile broke through the ice on Georgian Bay in Tay Township late Friday night.

Police say the incident was reported just before 10 p.m. near Robin’s Point Road, where two snowmobiles had been travelling together several hundred metres from shore. One machine went through the thinning ice, sending both riders into the water, while the second sled made it back safely.

Both individuals were wearing flotation suits, which helped keep them safe until firefighters arrived and pulled them from the water. They were taken to hospital as a precaution due to cold exposure.

An OPP helicopter was initially dispatched but later called off once crews confirmed the riders were safely rescued.
