A 42-year-old tow truck operator from Kitchener was killed Wednesday morning after being hit by a vehicle while assisting a stranded motorist on Highway 401 near Ayr.

The collision happened around 7:18 a.m. in the westbound lanes near Oxford Road 3. Ontario Provincial Police say the driver who struck the worker fled the scene. The vehicle is described as a commercial transport truck featuring a blue tractor and trailer, covered by a black tarp.

All westbound lanes between Cedar Creek Road and Oxford Road 29 are closed for several hours as the investigation continues.

Police are asking anyone who drove through the area between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m., especially those with dashcam footage, to contact investigators.
