Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after a traffic stop west of Kingston ended with a vehicle submerged in Lake Ontario.
The incident occurred around 10:55 p.m. on April 21 along Bath Road in Lennox and Addington County, when Ontario Provincial Police attempted to pull over a vehicle. During the stop, the vehicle left the roadway, entered a ditch, and then went into the lake.
Authorities have not confirmed how many occupants were inside at the time. A large-scale search effort is ongoing, involving marine, aviation, and underwater recovery teams, along with support from a joint rescue coordination centre.
Highway 33 has been closed at County Road 21 as crews continue their work.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has taken over the case to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Update – In the morning of April 23, SIU says one unidentified body has been found in the submerged vehicle in the lake.
