A Welland man is facing multiple charges after a hit-and-run that left a pedestrian seriously injured and killed a dog. Niagara Regional Police say the incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3, along Thorold Road between Bridlewood Drive and Rose Avenue.

The pedestrian, who was walking a dog at the time, was struck by a vehicle that fled the area. The victim was taken to a hospital outside the region with injuries initially described as life-threatening, though police later confirmed the condition had stabilized. The dog died at the scene.

Officers later located the suspected vehicle and arrested 44-year-old Sandev Varaich of Welland. He has been charged with failing to remain at the scene causing bodily harm, impaired operation causing bodily harm, and impaired driving. The vehicle was seized, and Varaich was held for a bail hearing on Sunday, Jan. 4, in St. Catharines.
