A 54-year-old woman was rescued after being injured in a snowmobile incident near Present Island on Georgian Bay Monday afternoon.
Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police said the woman fell from her snowmobile when its track detached, causing the machine to stop suddenly. The crash occurred several kilometres from shore, prompting a complex rescue due to the remote setting and unstable ice conditions.
Penetanguishene Fire Services deployed its ARGO all-terrain vehicle to assist, while members of the Southern Georgian Bay OPP used marine snow vehicles to reach the scene. Crews from Midland Fire Services and Simcoe County Paramedic Services also took part in the operation.
Emergency responders safely transported the woman off the ice to Midland, where paramedics took her to hospital for treatment.
Authorities are reminding snowmobilers to carry a fully charged cellphone, inform someone of their travel plans, and bring emergency supplies and location-sharing tools such as the What3Words app before heading out.
