An investigation is underway after a woman was trapped inside her apartment during a fire in north Barrie Sunday night.
Barrie Fire and Emergency Services responded to the Duckworth Street building around 11 p.m. and arrived with six apparatus. Firefighters discovered the woman trapped in her bedroom as heavy smoke prevented her from escaping or attempting to extinguish the fire.
Crews communicated with her through an open window while working to bring the blaze under control. Because the fire was located between firefighters and the woman, they had to extinguish it before they could reach her.
The woman was taken to hospital for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.
The fire caused extensive damage to her unit but did not appear to spread to neighbouring apartments. Several residents were temporarily displaced and took shelter in Barrie Transit buses brought to the scene.
Firefighters remained at the scene until shortly after 2 a.m. Monday. Investigators returned later that morning to determine what caused the fire.
