A 64-year-old woman is in life-threatening condition after being struck by an Eglinton Crosstown LRT vehicle during testing on Saturday afternoon in Scarborough. The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. on a raised platform along Eglinton Avenue East, west of Pharmacy Avenue.
According to police, the woman was standing on the platform and, for reasons still unclear, stepped into the path of a westbound LRT vehicle undergoing test runs. Despite the operator reportedly honking the horn and slowing the train, the collision could not be avoided.
Emergency crews rushed the woman to a trauma centre with critical injuries. Authorities are currently reviewing video footage from the LRT and nearby businesses to determine exactly what happened. Investigators have not yet confirmed whether speed or other factors played a role.
Officials are urging pedestrians to use designated crossings and remain alert, avoiding distractions such as mobile phones—especially near transit lines.
Both the TTC and Metrolinx expressed concern for the victim and confirmed they are cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation led by Toronto Police.
