Peel Regional Police are investigating a hit-and-run that seriously injured a 70-year-old woman after she was struck while helping manage traffic during a wide-load escort.

The incident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. Thursday near Truscott Drive, close to Southdown Road and Highway 403. Officers say a white Ford pickup truck was acting as an escort vehicle for an oversized load and had slowed to control traffic in the area.

According to investigators, the driver of the pickup stepped out of her vehicle to halt approaching traffic when another vehicle bypassed the escort setup and struck her. The driver then left the scene without stopping.

Paramedics transported the injured woman to hospital, where she was treated for serious non life-threatening injuries.

At around 3 p.m., police confirmed that the suspect hit-and-run driver surrendered to officers. Details regarding possible charges have not yet been released.
