A fatal snowmobile crash in Nipigon prompted a major highway shutdown on Tuesday and is now under investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police.
First responders were called shortly after 7 a.m. to an area near Settler’s Road, where a young passenger from the Ojibway Nation of Saugeen was found deceased at the scene.
Following the incident, a lengthy portion of Highway 11/17 was closed, extending from Highway 587 toward Pass Lake to the Nipigon River Bridge, and remained inaccessible into the afternoon as authorities continued their work.
Few details have been released so far, and police are urging anyone with relevant information to assist with the ongoing investigation.
