A 17-year-old cyclist is facing charges following a collision with a vehicle in Vaughan on Tuesday. York Regional Police were called around 3 p.m. to the intersection of Dufferin Street and Beverley Glen Road, where they found a white vehicle in the right-turn lane and a damaged bicycle nearby.
Paramedics treated the cyclist for minor injuries at the scene, while the vehicle driver was uninjured. Investigators determined the cyclist had been riding southbound in the northbound lanes and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision.
The teen has been charged with careless driving and operating a bicycle without a helmet. Police are reminding cyclists to follow traffic rules, as they are subject to the same laws as motorists. This includes riding in the same direction as traffic, obeying traffic signals, wearing helmets (especially for those under 18), using hand signals, and ensuring bikes are properly equipped with bells, lights, and reflectors.
The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is asked to contact York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
